Jack Loydd

Jack is 18 and is from the Anchorage Park area of Portsmouth. He first heard about the project through an aunt who works for Portsmouth Council, who thought it would be just the thing for him to be involved in. (The Council have been long-standing supporters of the project as they are the owners of Lively Lady)

Like the other Young Adults, Jack’s been helping with the fundraising through collecting at Fratton Park and bag-packing at supermarkets as well as taking part in the training. He’s learnt many new skills through doing that, but he’s also found that some aspects have taken him by surprise. Before starting his involvement with the project Jack, like many people, thought sailing was just for rich people. Since he’s been learning to sail he’s discovered that’s not the case at all and that sailing brings many benefits with it. He said,
“I love being able to steer the boat on my own. It’s a fantastic feeling to have that control and it’s a great responsibility. I really feel the work I’ve done with the project has helped to give me a greater sense of self-belief and I’m sure that will continue as I start on my leg.”

He also found there were many benefits to being a part of some of the racing the project has done with Lively Lady. His take on that was,
“doing the boat race was fantastic - just going as fast as we could all the time and having to follow instructions to the letter. It made me feel important!”

Jack’s delighted that he’s been selected for the leg from Miami to Jamaica and is really looking forward to discovering things about that region and seeing the wildlife.
