Sam Turner
Sam, from Waterlooville (a town just north of Portsmouth) is 18. He got involved with the project through the sea cadet corps. Initially inspired by Alan's presentation to his cadet group, he then had to write a 200 word essay on why he should be chosen for the project
He's very clear on what he's gained so far from working with the project and said, "I feel I have learnt how best to work as a team. I have also learnt that if you don't ask for things in life you don't get".
Another thing that Sam has found beneficial and also inspiring is the challenge of having to work with so many different individuals, and discovering that each one brings different strengths, and weaknesses, to a project like this but that, together, they can make it happen.
He's been hard at work on the fundraising too, helping out with the group activities like bag packing and the Christmas fete and has also been washing cars for small amounts. He has also been very lucky to receive some sponsorship from SEWARD ARC.
Sam's leg of the trip from Panama to Guatemala will also introduce him to new cultures - he's only ever been abroad once before so he's really looking forward to the experience.
He's already clear that involvement with The Raymarine Lively Lady Project has been a life-changing experience. As he said, "how many people can say they were a member of a team that has traveled around the world?".
With his leg still to come, that experience can only continue. << back
