The first time I sailed was on a 14' centerboard on Washoe Lake in Nevada as a teen. I graduated to sailing Lake Tahoe while in College with a buddy of mine who ranked 3rd in his class racing in the area on a 20' Cal anchored at Lake Tahoe. I've sailed on and off through the years since, but only recently purchased an old Cal 25' which is moored at South Lake Tahoe.
I became interested in the project while researching a degree at Portsmouth in Marine Biology (yachting). A friend of mine in Ireland encouraged me to email Alan to see if I could participate in some way. Alan responded and I've been studying and sailing every chance I get.
In real life I sell plumbing at a major retailer. My career was originally in journalism and in public relations, at which I excelled for a number of years. Today I enjoy living life a day at a time with my two boys. I am from Carson City, Nevada, which is the state capital. My boat is moored at Lake Tahoe, a few miles away in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I have been known to sail her in January while everyone else is skiing!
The legs I will be sailing are from Acapulco to San Diego.
I wanted to become involved in the Raymarine Lively Lady Project because I enjoy sailing, something I haven't been able to do in my past to a great degree but do as much as I can today. I also have excellent people skills, particularly in working with troubled youth -- something I now do on a daily basis. My 25 years' experience in Journalism and PR should also be a help in publicizing the North American legs of the journey.
I do believe this to be a life-changing experience for me and those around me. Many, many, people are watching me as I grow to meet the challenge of sailing part way around the world. For them, and my participation, I am grateful. << back
